As a branch of Gnosticism, the Cathars despised the physical body and sexual desire, believing that the material (physical) world was the creation of Satan.

The Cathar "clergy," known as **"Perfecti" (The Perfects)**, were forbidden from engaging in sexual intercourse even for procreation. They were also prohibited from eating meat, adhering to a strict vegetarian diet.

This was because meat was considered a product of reproduction. Consequently, other foods resulting from reproduction—such as eggs, cheese, and butter—were also forbidden.
