The wickerwork pattern found on the ceiling of this machiya is known as an “ajiro tenjo”. The word “ajiro” also refers to a traditional Japanese fishing device that was used in place of nets to catch fish in rivers & lakes.0

Admired for its unique texture and wickerwork pattern, this ‘ajiro’ design began to be used in ceilings of tea rooms, hats, baskets, and more!0
