Made of thin planks of woven wood (such as cypress, cedar, or bamboo) ‘ajiro’ were famously used along the Uji River in Kyoto City to catch fish, and has been found written in poems dating back to the Heian Period (794–1185).
Admired for its unique texture and wickerwork pattern, this ‘ajiro’ design began to be used in ceilings of tea rooms, hats, baskets, and more!
