Machiyajapan 京都 | This traditional Japanese house in the northern Gion area of Kyoto city features an interesting design feature on the ceiling of the second floor Japanese room. Any guesses as to what item, integral to everyday life for many Japanese people back in the day, inspired this design?

The wickerwork pattern found on the ceiling of this machiya is known as an “ajiro tenjo”. The word “ajiro” also refers to a traditional Japanese fishing device that was used in place of nets to catch fish in rivers & lakes.
