〓 Incapable of understanding the gravity of the Emishi rebellions from Tohoku that had recurred since ancient times, generations of Tokugawa upstarts, despite being appointed as wartime commanders-in-chief to subdue the Emishi, were completely manipulated from the time of the founder, Ieyasu, onward by Nankobo Tenkai of the Tendai school (an Emishi from Aizu) and others. Ultimately, they failed to execute a single expedition to subdue the Emishi up until the end of the Edo period.
